In-N-Out Burger in Santa Rosa? (Please!)

inandout.jpgWhy should our southern neighbors in Rohnert Park and Petaluma get all the beefy, messy, animal-style goodness of In-N-Out when Santa Rosans don’t?

Sheer unfairity, I tell you.

But one of my most intrepid BiteClubbers, one Robert S. Lee of Santa Rosa, has not only informed me, but has actually taken pictures and tracked down City Planning documents that point to the SR getting an In-N-Out of its very own. Maybe.

Seems that there will be a hearing in late August regarding the possibility of the burger spot moving to the former King Buffet location just off Steele Lane near Coddingtown. Very conveniently located to my house.

Word from the big cheeses at I-N-O corporate: Don’t get your patties a fryin’ just yet. There are apparently no IMMEDIATE plans to open in Santa Rosa (they say), and this is likely just a scouting mission by their real estate branch. We know a smoke screen when we hear it, though. I mean, have you seen the lines in Rohnert Park?

Stay tuned Secret Menu Scouts.
And thanks, Robert. You’re a peach!

Speaking of Animal-style, need a primer on the secret menu? Here’s the 411:

- Animal Style: Gets you a burger with a grilled, mustard-covered bun; grilled onions (instead of raw); pickles and extra special sauce.

- Protein Style: Atkins is so over, but hangers-on like their burger between two pieces of lettuce. No bun.

- Grilled Cheese: Cheeseburger, hold the burger

- Double Meat: Double Double, hold the cheese

- Wish Burger: Veggie burger

- Flying Dutchman: Two meats, two cheeses, nothin’ else

- 3×3, 4×4-100×100: Three
meat patties, three cheeses-up to 100-which someone recently actually
ordered and ate with several friends-who later puked in the parking lot.

I would love to have the In & Out in Santa Rosa, but Coddingtown area is not a good idea. Please consider Hunter Steak – Old Wendy’s would be the best place for it. Please let this happen !!1

    i could not agree more!

  3. ugh 23. Sep, 2009 at 10:49 pm #

no thanks… all we need is another fast food crap burger and cars idling fuming up the place waiting for them… yuck.

Have you heard of an Indian Fast food opening in S R mall? Curry in a Hurry?

Sonic is my choice!!!! The nearest one is in American Canyon near Vallejo.

  6. Tom Joynt 25. Aug, 2009 at 6:45 am #

Take a lesson from Marin, since this is more like Marin with each passing day, drop the drive through! Get out and walk for the burger! Good product, no need to fume in your car!

  7. In-and_Out Fan 24. Aug, 2009 at 2:07 pm #

I agree, put it where the Hunter Steak House used to be. Less congestion to an already congested area, and we or I would still go there. SR needs an In-and-Out. It will still do great business in that area.

  8. tommy wren 24. Aug, 2009 at 6:42 am #

i would love a INO in SR… but i agree put it where the old hunter steak house is that area looking so run down and keep the congestion away from coddingtown.. i hate going that direction around 5pm. thats my twocents worth.

  9. Me 23. Aug, 2009 at 5:37 pm #

Why can’t they tear down the old Hunter Steakhouse and the vacant Wendy’s on Hopper and build it there?
I saw some young people counting cars near that intersection a few weeks ago and if they are basing the traffic situation on that, that is down right dumb. School wasn’t in session the County complex is not in full swing. Just you wait for the mess!!!

  10. Origninalist 23. Aug, 2009 at 5:47 am #

Lets put it in Old Courthouse Square! And close Medocino and Fourth St and have it straddle the intersection!
This will give the overpaid city employees a place to reduce their current expenses for food and we can cut their bloated salaries.
We can reroute our Train to Nowhere to downtown and then go by Lowes down in the business slums south of the downtown area!
Thge fact is the city will refuse both, income is never a problem for our city, it can just raise parking fees and the sales taxes to bailout their own incompetance!

the people who are complaining about in and out opening, are the same whiners who complain about wasting their tax dollars on people who are on welfare and/or who do not work, in and out by far is way more earth friendly compared to any other fast food chain there is, and it would create around 40 more jobs, it would also help out the local economy, wherever they put it im sure would cause some traffic but look at rp that line is always kickin and no-ones complainin people are still gettn their grub on so i say f$$k yeah in and out bring it!!!!!!!!

  12. MW 22. Aug, 2009 at 10:17 am #

The In & Out in Redding (off the 44) is a pain to get to, but that doesn’t stop people from going. Build it and we will come. The location that they are looking at now is going to be a headache unless they somehow fix that intersection (which I don’t know how it could be done). That intersection is a MESS a 5:00. I’m wondering if the freeway will back up as well with the increased traffic.

Tommy’s was suggested by “No Skinny Chicks” I have to second that recomendation. The Tommy’s Chili-Cheese Burger is recommended by 9 out of 10 cardiologist who want more patients. Boy, they are good, especially with Chili Fries where you can see the greese floating on the top of the chili. I’ve only seen one out of the LA area and that was in Fresno, but I’d go to one here as long as no one told my doctor.

  14. azulviejo 21. Aug, 2009 at 12:42 pm #

    Yes, yes, yes!
Why don’t they put it at 4th and Bryden.
Then I can walk back and forth at lunch!!!
Or replace all the Arby’s with In and Out’s!

The old Burger King location across from the JC isn’t close enough to the freeway for an In-n-Out location. Just look at where they locate other restaurants. The old Wendy’s on Cleveland is also a horrible idea because it’s only really accessible for Southbound traffic. Getting there from northbound 101 is a HUGE pain in the ass, not to mention getting back onto 101 north from there.

  17. MW 21. Aug, 2009 at 10:31 am #

I’m a HUGE In & Out fan both in business practices and quality of food, but to put a restaurant at the busiest intersection in Sonoma County is NOT a good idea.

  18. Michaela 20. Aug, 2009 at 11:24 pm #

The idiots and control freaks on the city council and design review board in Santa Rosa will make it very difficult for In-N-Out to open a restaurant anywhere in town. They like to think that they know what is best for all of us and keep anything that is not a locally owned yuppie joint out of our choices to patronize. That’s why tax dollars are going to Rohnert Park and Windsor, who make it much easier for national chains to open up shop. The chains treat their employees much better than the small mom-and-pop businesses preferred by the local powers that be. Most of the latter offer no health insurance, paid vacation, paid sick days or retirement benefits.
Some time ago someone was paid a huge fee to come up with a stupid and now unused motto for the city of Santa Rosa. I’ll give them one for free: “Santa Rosa. It used to be nice here.”

Am I the only one who sees the emperor passing by starkers? In-n-Out Burgers are soooooo overrated (not to mention over-salted). I’ve never understood the cult of I-n-O nor can I see what distinguishes their burgers from any other fast food burger: more bad-for-everything grain-fed, feedlot beef, whimpy bleached-flour buns not up to the dripping meat juice, and garnishes that arrive daily on trucks from mega-farms that haven’t met a petroleum-based pesticide they didn’t love. Oh, go ye rubes and flock to this alter of mediocrity and leave the good burger joints to those with live taste buds. This is Sonoma County for crying out loud: we need anthor fast food outlet like we need another drought.

  20. A Fisher 20. Aug, 2009 at 5:40 pm #

YES! Bring them to SR! they will not cause extra 101 congestion…..all In and Outs are located by the highways.

  21. Mokupuni 20. Aug, 2009 at 3:39 pm #

Just what Steele Lane needs to jam pack that intersection even more at 5pm. Noooooooo!
It would be so much better on Mendocino as another has suggested. Could you imagine the custom they would receive from SRJC students and staff?

  22. BiteClubEats 20. Aug, 2009 at 3:38 pm #

Oh sweet niblets. That would be within walking distance of work.

  23. Vince 20. Aug, 2009 at 3:22 pm #

Michael, great idea about the old Burger King across from the JC. That would be a much better location!

  24. jonhen 20. Aug, 2009 at 2:41 pm #

But why can’t they make better fries. They suck in comparison to the burgers

  25. Sonic Out 20. Aug, 2009 at 2:28 pm #

Cara – Your use of the word “fatty” I am sure was meant in the best possible and most loving way because I know calling people derogatory names because they choose what they are free to choose, even if it’s not the best choice, is the best way to get them to change to what you think is right. Right?
Anyway, this fatty thinks also thinks we should get a Chipoltle. I miss that place. I could make my burrito leftovers last like 3 days!

  26. DESIREE MAREZ 20. Aug, 2009 at 12:21 pm #

wohoo that would be great, looking forward to that one. plus the outback steakhouse, and a really 99 cent store where nothing is over a dollar like the one they have in vallejo, not the dollar tree. so many other places need to come in. sonic, casper hot dogs that are in richmond ca,nations burgers from vallejo.

  27. Sue Barrass 20. Aug, 2009 at 9:10 am #

Heather they also have fries anamial style not bad at all, except for the calories. When I worked in Santa Rosa a group of us would go to Rohnert Park for the burgers so worth it.

  28. Nicole 20. Aug, 2009 at 8:32 am #

    What a tease!!!

  29. NoSkinnyChicks 20. Aug, 2009 at 8:22 am #

This FATTY says BRING IT ON!!!! YAY In-N-OUT. WE just need a Tommy’s Burger to go with it!

  30. Cara 20. Aug, 2009 at 8:11 am #

Just what we need, more fatties sitting in their idling cars at a very bad traffic location.
Recipe for obesity: eliminate gym classes and put fast “food” at every major intersection.

  31. henry coleman 20. Aug, 2009 at 6:35 am #

It sure would be nice to have an In-N-Out in Minneapolis, where they don’t have a clue as to what a cheeseburger is, let alone a double-double.

  32. Sonic Out 20. Aug, 2009 at 1:34 am #

Charles, thanks! I was mapping the Sonic from a non-Sonoma County Zip code. I am even happier now! Road trip!! :)

  33. michael 19. Aug, 2009 at 10:36 pm #

How about this… In-N-Out at the old Burger King across from the Junior College/Santa Rosa High School. CAN YOU SAY OH MY GOD??!! My girlfriend and I have wanted to put a poster board sign up there as a joke for eons. But it’s got a nice, big parking lot to afford the lines custom to In-N-Out… And how about an Outback Steakhouse in the old Acapalco site on Mendocino? Hells yes.

  34. Chick Fil A 19. Aug, 2009 at 10:33 pm #

Save a cow eat Chicken. They did not invent the chicken, just the chicken sandwich!!

  35. BiteClubEats 19. Aug, 2009 at 10:12 pm #

Has anyone read the book about in-N-Out? I’ve been meaning to pick it up. I’ve never totally understood Chik-Fil-A, but i’ll take your word for it. Chicken and pickles never really turned me on.

  36. The chef 19. Aug, 2009 at 9:10 pm #

why would Santa rosa deny In-n-out? we have johnny garlics, tex wasabi’s and we’ve had burger king and wendy’s close stores. The location(off Steele)is bad due to poor traffic flow from one side of 101 to the other. I also like the old Wendys spot(easy on-off of 101) and love the idea of chick-fil-a someday. They are the in-n-out of the chicken world. They are all over southern california.

  37. charles 19. Aug, 2009 at 8:50 pm #

The nearest Sonic is in American Canyon by Napa. It’s next to a new WalMart.

  38. Sonic Out 19. Aug, 2009 at 8:08 pm #

    Nancie,
I respect your opinion. You are pretty brave to try to get the post-ers here to take a second look, since most seem to love meat. I am thinking that many of us are well aware of the issues in production, especially living here in SoCo. Many of our fair citizens like to tell others where they are “wrong” rather than giving credit for making the best choices out of certain options.
If you want to find out more about INO specifically in their practices, you should google them. It’s actually interesting. I actually have done my own research, and out of all the fast food, I think they stand above in so many ways. No one is perfect and they make changes when they find something is not right. Here is a link to get you started: http://www.in-n-out.com/freshness.asp
Also, if I could, I would raise my own beef for consumption. I don’t have a problem with it. And I would make my own INO style burgers. Because I like them. And I am free to make that choice. But for now I must make the best choice I can and, after thinking much about it, I choose INO. :)

  39. BRian 19. Aug, 2009 at 7:59 pm #

And the lettuce screams when you bite into it. But I don’t go to the vegan blog and whine about it.
Hurray for INO but the location really isn’t all that. The traffic lights in that area are in dire need of re-calibration to allow traffic to flow. Thr old Wendy’s on Hopper is a better idea. And bring back the “Big Yellow House!”

  40. nancie greer 19. Aug, 2009 at 7:28 pm #

Do you have any idea or care where and how those cows live, and what they eat, before you chow down on them. it ain”t pretty. What’s in the beef??

  41. Sonic Out 19. Aug, 2009 at 7:26 pm #

Ok so I lied about the only Sonic north of Tracy. I was relying on old memory/experience. There are Sonic’s in Anderson, Roseville (2), Yuba City, Woodland. Still, when I move up there, it’ll be closer than here – unless things change, which they tend to do. Woot!

  42. Sonic Out 19. Aug, 2009 at 7:19 pm #

I vote for a Sonic Burger and or a Chic-Fil-A, which to make myself laugh, I pronounce Fi-Lay, which is actually what I thought it was when we moved to Santa Rosa in 1987 from a very small town in the north valley. But, oh man, a Sonic Burger would be AWESOME!!! In fact, the reports by the big wigs in said small town is that Sonic is in fact opening up there. Which would make it the only spot north of like Tracy or something, I think. Which would be AWESOME!!!
But yay for INO in the mean time. I agree, it is the best, most natural tasting fast burger around. And the most bang for the buck, too. By the way, you can also GET YOUR FRIES ANIMAL STYLE TOO which adds so much to them.

  43. Patty 19. Aug, 2009 at 6:55 pm #

Yeah for In-N-Out!!! It is the only fast food I can eat because I too have celiac disease and am also allergic to soy. That’s why I get my burger protein style (no wheat). I’ve been hoping for them to come here for a long time!

  44. Shannon 19. Aug, 2009 at 6:31 pm #

I would be very happy to see an In-N-Out here in Santa Rosa! But I have to admit I would really, really like to see a Sonic in the area.

  45. Stephen 19. Aug, 2009 at 4:08 pm #

Another In & Out, how about bringing in a Wienerschnitzel, Cheese Cake Factory, Elephant bar…first?

  46. rdlavine 19. Aug, 2009 at 4:06 pm #

yeah! this is our choice for fast food for sure. My son has celiac and it is one of the few places where someone with gluten intolerance can enjoy french fries!!
    Bring it on!!

  47. Chick Fil A 19. Aug, 2009 at 3:53 pm #

What about Chick-fil-a…..I want that back, much better than…

  48. BiteClubEats 19. Aug, 2009 at 3:09 pm #

I eliminated the doltish rant from the previous commenter.
Hate In-N-Out all you want, but at least be clever about it, little schnitzel.

  49. Nancy 19. Aug, 2009 at 2:53 pm #

If you want to support In-N-Out, go to the city’s meeting and speak about it. Otherwise we may not get one!

  50. mayra 19. Aug, 2009 at 2:18 pm #

IN N OUT DOES NOT SUCK AND I LOVE THAT IT HAS THE OPTION FOR A GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH AND IT IS AWESOME!!!

  51. Rachael 19. Aug, 2009 at 1:24 pm #

Whoopie!!!! I’ve beening saying we needed one of these for the longest time.

  52. half full 19. Aug, 2009 at 12:29 pm #

You get the burgers without the sauce and have them use ketchup & mustard instead.

  53. sue 19. Aug, 2009 at 12:01 pm #

I am anti-chain…..except for In-N-Out. They keep it simple, good, and they treat their employees fairly! They also have great customer service! Years ago my son got an undercook burger. They immediately gave him a new one, correctly cooked. I was concerned still (it was when Mad Cow was a big deal) so I called their 800 #. They apologized, sent me gift cert, called again to see how my return visit was, and sent me a x-mas card. I was impressed!

  54. BiteClubEats 19. Aug, 2009 at 11:36 am #

And yes, my boss just pointed out that “unfairity” is not a word. This, of course, I am aware of. I just thought it sounded funny. So don’t get your grammar panties all twisted up.
And yes, Sonic would be awesome too. I always think their ads look so delicious.
Of course, not at the expense of good local restaurants (I always feel I have to say that, too). We don’t want to turn into a land of chains.

  55. knuckle cracker 19. Aug, 2009 at 11:18 am #

  56. Vince 19. Aug, 2009 at 11:09 am #

YES! Finally! Hey, did you know you can get your fries animal style as well? Mmmmmmmuwahahaha! You can also ask for your fries “well done” (crispy).

  57. Suzanne 19. Aug, 2009 at 11:09 am #

  58. KRae 19. Aug, 2009 at 11:02 am #

This has, literally, made my entire month. Fast food is so evil in general, but In-N-Out is so fantastic in particular. Please please!

  59. gnat 19. Aug, 2009 at 10:40 am #

Yes, In N Out or Sonic would be great here. I know one on Hopper and the other on Steele Lane. :-)

  60. Wojamo 19. Aug, 2009 at 10:09 am #

Oh….my…..goodness!!!! This is the best news I’ve heard all week!

  61. nola 19. Aug, 2009 at 10:07 am #

I emailed In-N-Out last year to consider opening a spot at the abandonded Wendy’s / Hunter Steakhouse location on Cleveland Ave….maybe it was a little too close to Mc’Ds! But I’ll take a Santa Rosa In-N-Out where ever they’ll put one….however it could make traffic really insane at the freeway exit you need to take to get to it!

  62. capjack 19. Aug, 2009 at 7:07 am #

    How about a SONIC!!!!

  63. Charlotte 18. Aug, 2009 at 6:37 pm #

First of all, thank goodness for this news! In-n-Out is one of the only fast food places people like myself who have wheat allergies or intolerances can safely eat at.
And it’s the Protein style that does it – no bun means no wheat, and no hidden wheat or gluten. Their fries are also safe for us, as they’re freshly cut, then fried immediately. No wheat-based coating like almost all the major fast food places do.
    We look forward to this!!!
