Tex Wasabi’s closed (for now)

wasabi.jpgGuy Fieri’s downtown Santa Rosa restaurant/bar Tex Wasabi’s will be closed at least until the beginning of October after a water main break demolished most of the floor.

An company insider tells BiteClub that it was similar to the problem that nearby Checker’s Restaurant recently went through. “They’re 100 year old pipes (under Fourth St.). It’s just moving down the line,” he said.

The company plans to use the closure to rehab/remodel the inside of the restaurant — something that was apparently already in the works.

Stay tuned for more details.

I just recently have been reading comments on my shot down Hof-Brau which We all tried so hard to keep it open for Santa Rosa,I just ran into Tex Wasabi’s commenter’s! so I must share with you my comments.
As a resident of this city and if there is any more respect left for hard working people in this town I would like to urge every one to really see what a young man ,his family and friends have accomplished right here in our city so the rest of the nation now beside seeing us occasionally as a wine country ,they see us every day just because this young man does not rest and work harder day after day to keep up with the competitions from the rest of the world, please be happy for him be happy for you and encourage and praise others so they go where Guy has gone, and achieve what he has achieved in such a short time,I only met this young man twice and had meal in his two different location so i am not going to judge his business, but rest assure If I ask you Please share your experiences in any eating establishment with the Manager/supervisor almost immediately,do so this will give us much better dining rooms in Santa Rosa and you will enjoy eating out more often.
Most of you know this:all businesses are hard to work in or run them but please take it from me, Running a resturant is not every ones job and is not such an easy task, praise that we have many good men and women resturant operator in Santa Rosa, support and appreciate ones which have put the name of your city on the map even Bolder, keep on going Guy.

As of yesterday (03/10/10) Tex Wasabi’s was still closed and had paper covering its windows. It still has the appearance of not opening anytime soon.

what’s the status of this place? still closed? if it hasn’t re-opened by now, maybe it never will?

The two times (we like to give second chances) my boyfriend and I have ventured thru the door of Wasabis we’ve been blindsided by the malodorous stench of piss and spilled beer. Both of us were dumbfounded, as we’ve been in many bars and not even the “DirtiestDingiestDiviest” bar we’ve been in smelled that bad. Needless to say, we did a gag-reflexive about-face and left.
Also, I recently ate in the patio area at Johnny Garlics in Santa Rosa and was struck by the lack of upkeep and obvious neglect – things just appeared tattered & looked and felt kinda scuzzy. Feeling it gave me was “when the cat’s away…” as if the staff had no pride or respect.
When I worked (anyone remember Hemingways in MontVil & Polka-Dots in RR Square?) in restaurants (my ‘back in the olden days’ ole geezer moral to the story) there was often a contagious desire imbued in us (from top down)to make the place shine. sigh…km

First, to get in, you have to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke, in both the back and front entrances. Second, it’s not unusual to see patrons urinating on the outside walls (adjoining businesses as well), and lastly, they need to wash the vomit off the walls!

These types of places are at the beginning of their end.
“Back to basics” is the new “over the top”.
Re-open as a family diner and watch the patrons roll in.
Those more cautious with their cash these days are currently the largest segment of the population.

I hope they stay closed. The food here was pathetic, the place was filthy, and the staff was a bunch of tools. You would think that a “celebrity chef” would hold his restaurants to a higher standard but it was even worse than a “diner, drive in, or dive.” Time to get out of the restaurant biz, buddy.

The water main really did break. Work for a company that sells stuff to repair water mains and things of that sort.
There are a few of you that I agree with. They do have great drinks that aren’t watered down but are a bit pricey. The bar area could use a little bit more TLC in the cleaning category. Sometimes you need a little more cleaner to clean up the nasty bar smell.
All in all, it’s a fun place that I don’t mean was meant to be a “true” sushi experience. There hasn’t been anything that I didn’t like there, granted some things brought out the “I had better” phrase.
It is a hang out for the younger crowd and sometimes you’ll see older people drinking more than the younger ones. And, in case you haven’t noticed, security is a must these days with all the underage drinking. Santa Rosa isn’t the only place that has security in place for restaurants/bars after a certain time.

I was staying in downtown santa rosa for job training in august and on my lunch break we decided to try tex wasabi. upon entering the restaurant, we were smacked in the face with the overwhelming stench of RAW SEWER… or maybe it was someone that had stomach rot? we were seated at a table and the smell got worse. im not a sissy, but i had to physically plug my nose to stop gagging. the people at the table next to us said, “it goes away after a while”. we couldnt stomach it and left.

Re-open as a family diner and watch the patrons roll in.

Well at least it isn’t because the kitchen workers didn’t wash their hands, like last time at his other restaurants…no one got sick this time, I don’t think so….

I heard that it was a sewer line running under the restaurant that broke, not a water main.

I can just see Guy Fieri checking these comments on his iPhone at a stoplight while driving his yellow Lamborghini.
He finishes reading, revs the engine, straightens his wristbands, and mutters “Pssh. Haters.”
Then he cranks up the Van Halen and tears-ass off down Farmers Lane.

I have eaten here a few times. I thought it was good but now reading all of these comments, I am scared to go back! Even after the re-model! Yikes!!

  26. g nelly 11. Sep, 2009 at 10:27 am #

Maybe these comments should be sent to the food network
I hoped once he was made the next food network star he’d
quite with the lame restaurants here in sonoma county.

Will anyone miss it? Overpriced novelty, confused “Fuzion”. Take the opportunity while it’s closed to change the concept.

I love Tex Wasabi!! I never got sick, the food is awesome, the drinks are tasty, we always have great service, and the bathrooms have always been clean (even the mens- my 2.5yr old son had to go ssooooo bad)! Haha – I can’t wait to see the remodel!!! ;)

Funny, no one’s talking about the rat infestation…don’t believe everything they’re tell you.

  30. DDD 10. Sep, 2009 at 5:17 pm #

Too funny! Maybe he should had more security! I walked on the OTHER side of the street just to avoid the crap outside!

  31. BiteClubEats 10. Sep, 2009 at 5:14 pm #

Totally true story. Tex Wasabi’s was the first Santa Rosa bar I went to when I moved here six years ago. Met McNibs there on a blind date. I can tell you there’s serious liquid courage in their mojitos.

LOL! So true Spores, Michelle, & Rosa. Hey I have an idea, maybe Guy can put it on his TV show as it definitely qualifies as a DDD, or as he says it “triple D”. DIRTY, DINGY, DIVE!

A culinary prayer has been answered and the screams of mis-treament of food can be quieted for a moment!

  34. Michelle 10. Sep, 2009 at 2:23 pm #

This place needs to be closed down. the sushi is horrible and my friends and i have been sick from their food several times. Hopefully it will do a FULL remodel and get good, safe food.

  35. Rosa 10. Sep, 2009 at 2:18 pm #

Maybe with this remodel they can find someone to clean the bar and the bathrooms every once in a while.
