Soup is less a food than a religion to me. It nourishes, comforts and restores my faith when things seem grim. As the weather turns cold, my thoughts turn to wrapping my fingers around a steaming bowl of split pea with ham or warm cheddar potato — two of my favorite hearty winter soups.
