A flood of BiteClubbers sent me this sad farewell to Forestville’s Mosaic Restaurant. According to Chef Tai Olesky, who sent the notes to restaurant fans, the kitchen will close for good on November 22, 2010.

Dearest Friends, Patrons and Family,
It is with absolute sorrow and regret that I find myself writing this; however, Mosaic Restaurant & Wine Lounge as we know it will be closing its doors for good on Monday November 22nd. Due to the economic climate and resulting lack of business we are simply unable to operate as we have done in the past. I want to personally thank all of you for the amazing support over these last five plus years. It has been an absolute honor and joy to play host and do what it is I love to do…thank you!!! The experience of cooking for and meeting so many wonderful folks makes this difficult, if not unbearable decision worth it in many ways. The friendships and happy faces I will never forget…the experiences… a part of me that cannot be removed.

That said, I would like to extend an invitation to come by this week for your last dose of the “Mosi” as we know it…and to say farewell.

The Mosaic team is very much still available for private events (and/or holiday gatherings), either at the restaurant or on your turf. And please do stay tuned for the next incarnation of our creative juices.

With the most sincere and unwavering love I can imagine…
wishing you all, the utmost that life has to offer.

Be happy and well!!
Sincerely, Tai Olesky

Sarah's Forestville Kitchen in Forestville is a casual breakfast and brunchery with locals dinners from Chef Gregory Hallihan

At the helm of Sarah’s Forestville Kitchen is Chef Greg Hallihan (formerly of Stella’s Cafe) — a breakfast/brunch/lunchery in the heart of Forestville.

Locals may remember it as the former Tin Pony, with a smashing outdoor courtyard just off the main drag and now-revamped indoor dining room. Here, Hallihan brings his solid kitchen skills to the table, pulling off a globe-trotting menu that ranges from fried chicken and grits to homemade corned beef to Thai curries.

This is a two-or-three visit spot, because there’s just so much that looks good. First-time picks include a memorable order of jalapeno cheese grits with shrimp, Sarah’s Ruben (made with the aforementioned corned beef), red curry and a Southern fried chicken sandwich. My dining pals, Evelyn and Jan both agreed that the grits were the standout of the day (and I concurred). Other BiteClubbers swear by breakfast, where yummies like a crispy Monte Cristo sandwich, biscuits and gravy, house scramble, and mixed veggie hash beckon. The cafe features a number of breads from nearby Nightingale Breads, the tiny bakery operated by former nurse Beth Thorp.

It’s a breakfast, brunch and lunch spot, with occasional winemaker or locals dinner, but you’ll need to call ahead or check out their website to find out when they’re open. Bring cash, because they don’t take checks or cards and reservations are only accepted by phone. 6566 Front Street, Forestville, 887-1055.

Henweigh Cafe
Northbay newcomers are putting final touches on the former Stella’s Cafe, which is set to reopen in early June as the Henweigh Cafe. Owner Dennis Kelly and fiancee Lois Nielsen are putting together a simple menu for sandwiches, burgers and panini for lunch and heartier pastas, ribs and steaks for dinner. They’re also planning to do Sunday brunch and a special fondue night during the week.

Located next to Mom’s Apple Pies on Gravenstein Highway, Kelly plans to keep prices affordable both for visitors along the Wine Trail to Forestville and Guerneville and locals. “We’re not a gourmet restaurant. This is a place for a family meal.”

Stay tuned for more details as opening approaches, or sign up on the restaurant’s website for news. www.henweighcafe.com

Pesto
Meanwhile, the iconic Alice’s Restaurant in Sebastopol has changed hands and is reopening as Pesto. Former owner, Alice Ferry will remain involved, behind the scenes with Jerri Luzania officially taking over the reigns. The restaurant will have a focus on local, sustainably harvested foods from a 30-mile radius of the restaurant, according to Ferry and change up frequently. True to its name, there are also plans to have up to seven different pestos on the menu. “We’re mixing flavor and healthy fun,” says Ferry. “We’re nuts about herbs.” 101 S Main St # A, Sebastopol, (707) 829-3212
