Backyard opening in Forestville

Sheldon and Kedan at Peter Lowell's

The former Sarah’s Forestville Kitchen will reopen in October as Backyard.

At the helm: Former Ad Hoc and Peter Lowell’s chef Daniel Kedan and Seth Harvey, formerly of Petite Syrah and the Girl and the Fig. Marianna Gardenhire will be pastry chef.

The menu: “It’s all from the backyard of Sonoma County,” said Kedan, who plans to highlight local farms and producers for the California-cuisine menu. “The food is what you’d have if you came to my house for a party,” Kedan said. Having worked at Lowell Sheldon’s farm-to-table eatery for the last year, he’s familiar with many of the local producers, and has continued to hone his classic techniques. The highlight of the Forestville space is a large outdoor patio, that’s usable about eight months of the year.

Inside is a 40-seat dining room. They’re sprucing up the space and working on the menu over the next few months, but plan to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant.

just at there last night (12/3/12) and was blown away. not just by the food, which was awesome, but by the concept, the hospitality, and smiles on all the cooks faces. Dan Kedan’s housemade burrata cheese is exceptional. if all neighborhood restaurants were like this, the whole country would eat better and be much happier.

Wow! A classy ambiance, a synergistic team at work and a fabulous menu of local farm-to-table cuisine! Hello to my new favorite restaurant! The Backyard in Forestville is doing it well and making the work look easy too. Every bite was savory and brilliant. With a changing menu, you have to get there quick to enjoy the Broccoli Salad topped with fresh mozzarella and olive tapenade. The vegetarian, and gluten-free gnocchi was the hit, with sweet butternut squash and cabbage- one of my favorite healing foods. If you can’t resist a good ol’ biscuit, order up the tender chicken pot pie and when you’re near the end, please do lick the dish. The flavors with the parsnips are exquisite. I think I caught a hint of nutmeg and/or cloves.

Now, if that’s not enough, rejoice at the non-alcoholic beverages on the menu: Lemon-Ginger Kifer local from The Kifery and Revive Kombucha on tap. Oh, and Racer 5 fans, just go! You will be happy.

Alas, anyone going there on a date with a woman who moans at the taste of chocolate, just wait for dessert. Chocolate, salt, caramel, rice puffs for a little crunch. I can’t say more if I intend for a proper G-rated post. If you go in a group, try the Apple Crisp with Candy Cap Mushroom Ice Cream too. Yes, I did say Mushroom Ice Cream. Open for breakfast and lunch too. 8-9pm Closed Tuesdays. Salads, flat bread and drinks only 2:30-5:30 pm.

P.S. Ride your Bike! It’s in our Backyard. Thank you to the new West County Favorite!

This is grreat another option to enjoy all of the local fare produced in Sonoma County…we are indeed spoiled. We have enjoyed Daniel’s work at Peter Lowell’s and look forward to the opportunity of having both options open to us.
If you haven’t been to Peter Lowell’s, you are missing out.
